Hiking in San Gerardo de Dota - Costa Rica

Through the year, our safe and comfortable walking trails are traversed by people of all nationalities, ages and walks of life - each with a different objective: scientific investigation, adventure, exercise, birdwatching, or simply to find the peace that comes from the beautiful cloud forest and pure fresh air.

We have 35 kilometers (22 miles) of forest trails, mostly through virgin woods. The altitude varies from 2,200 to 3,470 meters (7,220 ft to 11,384 ft). Enter our forest and you will be in a cathedral-like setting, dominated by the vast century-old trees and decorated with colorful plants and mushrooms. The celestial choir of hundreds of birds and multitudes of insects, mammals, and jewel-toned lizards and frogs will make your hike a magical and unforgettable experience.

Our paths can accomodate many walking levels and preferences. Trail elevation ranges from 2070 to 3642 meters (6790-11950 ft), so on one hike you may see many differences in the environment, from the páramo, with its sparse dwarf plants, to the majestic cloud forest and its abundant flora and fauna. Our challenging river path takes you over enormous rocks and twisting roots en route to a deceptively delicate, pounding waterfall of 30 meters (98 ft).

A half day tour is US$70 with a bilingual guide for 1 to 7 people. You can also hike the trails without a guide.
