The Quetzal Education Research Center is a joint venture between the Chacon family and Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma. QERC complements traditional instruction with thrusting students into research, interdisciplinary studies, and cross-cultural experiences.
Environmental problems are too complex to be solved within any one scientific discipline, yet each area of study offers its own insights into the world around us. Historians, linguists, entrepreneurs, and artists are all needed, because the tropics are home to a wide range of living things - including people. QERC offers students a semester-long education in many disciplines important in the tropics, from herpetology to tropical medicine. A semester at QERC includes supervised research conducted by the students and cross-cultural experiences in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. QERC works to integrate local farmers with research scientists, educators, and students from around the world in the effort to merge good conservation practice and economic viability in the local community. Our mission: to promote Christian stewardship of the planet and increase scientific knowledge of the cloud forest ecosystem. Christ tell us to be his representatives in all the world. Through QERC, a unique circle of influence is formed by Christian scholars who study here and the many lives that they influence and are influenced by in Central America. |
